What Is the Immersion Method?
When parents hear that a school or preschool is bilingual, they often imagine a few English lessons each week. At Maple Bear, however, we take a different approach. Our goal is not to teach English as a separate subject but to help children acquire it naturally through everyday experiences, play, communication, and exploration. This is the foundation of the immersion method, one of the key pillars of the Canadian educational model.
The word immersion means being fully surrounded by a language. Throughout the day, children are naturally exposed to English and use it as a tool for communication and learning. Just as they learn their native language by hearing and using it regularly, they acquire English through meaningful daily interactions. Language becomes a natural part of learning rather than the primary focus of instruction.
How Does Immersion Work in Preschool?
At Maple Bear Preschool, English is the primary language of the program. Children encounter it during play, creative activities, movement sessions, projects, and everyday communication. Teachers use gestures, visual aids, songs, stories, and other age-appropriate strategies to support understanding and help children feel comfortable in a new language environment.
This approach allows even children with no previous exposure to English to participate successfully and build confidence step by step. At the same time, we recognize the importance of a strong foundation in the local language. Through our Czech Centre, children continue to develop their Czech language skills and prepare for future learning within the Czech educational environment.
How Does Immersion Continue in Elementary School?
The immersion journey continues in Maple Bear Elementary School. Learning takes place in both English and Czech, with classes guided by both a local-language teacher and an English-speaking teacher. Students naturally use both languages while learning new concepts, collaborating with classmates, and solving problems.
Rather than separating languages into distinct parts of the day, we integrate them into the learning process. English and Czech become practical tools for thinking, communicating, and exploring new knowledge.
