The transition from Kindergarten to Grade 1 is a significant milestone for many children – and their parents. Expectations around focus, independence and responsibility increase; learning becomes more structured into subject-based themes; and missed lessons may need to be made up. Our preparatory class (Grade 0) provides an ideal bridging experience, helping children make this important step with confidence, joy, and a sense of security.
Each class is led by a team of two educators – one native English speaker and one native Czech teacher. Children are naturally immersed in both languages throughout the day. Our curriculum respects each child's individual learning pace – no child is pressured to speak before they are ready. Bilingual fluency develops gradually and with confidence.
Children learn through experiential, hands-on activities in small groups at structured learning centres. These centres are designed to develop key skills such as concentration, collaboration, creative thinking, and problem-solving. They take place twice a day and are always followed by an equally long period of free play, giving children time to process, reflect on, and build upon what they’ve learned. Outdoor time is part of every day, whether in the school garden, on walks, or at a nearby park. After lunch, children have time to rest and engage in quiet activities, tailored to their individual needs. The daily schedule is carefully designed to balance active and calm moments, supporting emotional well-being and healthy development.
Each class has a maximum of 15 children, allowing us to provide truly personalised attention. We understand that every child comes with a unique language background, learning pace, and set of strengths – and our team actively works with this in mind. Teaching is differentiated according to each child’s abilities and language level. Some children may acquire a second language quickly; others may need more time – and that’s perfectly normal. For some, this may even be a third or fourth language. Our nurturing environment and carefully designed programme respect the developmental needs of five-year-olds. The daily schedule supports both their physical and emotional energy levels while gently preparing them for the structure of primary school. Learning has a clear rhythm and purpose – yet remains playful, engaging and age-appropriate.
We welcome children regardless of their previous preschool experience. Our goal is to ensure that every child finishes the preparatory year equipped with the skills and confidence needed for a smooth and successful start to Year 1 – in both Czech and English.
Our preparatory class is a fully integrated part of the Maple Bear educational system and follows the proven Canadian curriculum, adapted to the Czech context. By combining two languages with a strong focus on soft skills, we give children a robust and well-rounded foundation for their continued educational journey.
