Amendment to the Education Act from September 2025 – What Changes for Parents and Schools

From September 1, 2025, the amendment to the Education Act No. 239/2025 Coll. will come into effect, bringing important changes for both kindergartens and primary schools.

Main changes:

New enrollment dates

  • Kindergarten: March 15 – April 15 (previously in May)

  • Grade 1: January 15 – February 15
    At Maple Bear, we will inform you of the dates in advance and assist you with the application process.

Sharing information between kindergartens and primary schools
Primary schools will receive the results of pedagogical diagnostics from the kindergarten to ensure a smoother start and more tailored support for each child.

Stricter rules for deferring compulsory school attendance

  • Requests can only be submitted at the time of enrollment.

  • Recommendations from specialists and an educational counseling center are required.

  • Additional deferrals during the first semester of Grade 1 will no longer be possible.

Teaching assistants in Grade 1 (from 2026)
Classes with 15 or more first graders will be entitled to a teaching assistant.

Descriptive assessment instead of grades

  • Grade 1: from school year 2027/2028

  • Grade 2: from school year 2028/2029

Limiting repetition of Grade 1
Automatic progression to Grade 2 unless parents specifically request otherwise.

Abolition of preparatory classes
From September 1, 2029.
